Week 9 1st XI report home to Dartington & totnes

Firstly, an apology to weekly visitors for the lack of report last week, holiday meant I was too busy to report about our win away to Chagford.

Saturday saw last years relegation partners return to Cloakham. With the sun out, the wicket appearing hard and a full strength XI available, after winning the toss Wakeley decided to have a bat. The decision looked ‘iffy’ when after 12 overs Axminster were one down with only 28 on the board. Paul Millers heroics from the previous week couldn’t be emulated, and conditions, surprisingly, made for hard run scoring. J.Hurford was joined by J.Seward and finally the runs started flowing. The two shared a stand of 150+ with Hurford scoring his second ton of the season (130) and Joel getting 38. Jons acceleration in runs is evident when he took 53 balls to reach 50 runs, then only another 24 to reach 100. Three quick wickets fell which brought R.Prior and Wakeley to the crease and the two piled on over 80 runs in just over 6 overs, principally scored by Prior with 44 runs off only 22 balls before bottom edging behind. Wakeley was unbeaten with 23.

Axminster were well aware of the danger from B.Loots, who tends to chance his arm and play some big shots…and after two overs D+T had 27 on the board. Prior then turned hero with the ball, taking Loots’ middle stump, then carrying on to claim another 4 wickets in his 9 over spell. M.Pile, once again!!!, bowled well and was unlucky not to add more than one wicket to his current season total. The other wickets fell to Nick Taylor and Gary Larcombe with two apiece with Dartington & Totnes all bowled out for 101.
Ax finished with the full 20 points and due to a lack of scorer (-2points) the opposition only finished with 2.
This match brought up the half way point of the Devon league season, and Axminster sit second in the league.
Next Saturday Ax take the short journey to Clyst St George for the return leg of the season.
